Derel and Ellen Monteith
are one of the worst-kept secrets on the Central Illinois jazz scene. Since their arrival in Peoria in late 2007, they have won the respect of the most prominent jazz musicians in the area and gathered many fans.  Derel is a pianist who studied in the prestigious jazz program at the University of Miami and thereafter with the Grammy-winning composer Maria Schneider.  He has performed with many jazz luminaries, such as the Artie Shaw Orchestra, Frank Foster, and Nnenna Freelon.  Ellen is a vocalist who has a broad performance background, not only in jazz but also in pop and musical theater.  She has performed with artists as wide-ranging as the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and James Brown and has been compared to Ella Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand, and other vocal legends.  Since her arrival in Central Illinois, she has won the hearts of many discerning jazz fans.  Derel and Ellen will be performing an engaging variety of music, including instrumental compositions recently written by Derel and a selection of compelling vocal pieces from Ellen.  They will be joined by the remarkable talents of Todd Kelly on trumpet, Mike Nellas on bass, and Jason Brannon on drums.

The Central Illinois Jazz Society (CIJS) House Band will play during the first set, under the leadership of Larry Harms. The CIJS House Band features outstanding jazz musicians from the area. They will entertain you with a mixture of jazz styles. This talented group is the heart of our monthly jazz program for the jazz fans of Central Illinois. They will present a variety of live jazz offerings. Please come out and support them.
